Healthy Minds, Safer Sites: A Bold Step for Mental Health in NSW Construction

The Minns Labor Government is setting a new standard for safety on NSW construction sites with its ground-breaking Healthy Minds, Safer Sites campaign. This initiative is all about ensuring that mental wellbeing is given as much priority as physical safety on our worksites, and it’s already making waves across the industry.

A Proactive Approach to Psychological Safety

Under the banner of the NSW Government’s Psychological Health and Safety Strategy 2024-2026, inspectors are hitting the ground to offer advice and practical resources to help manage psychosocial hazards. These hazards—ranging from harassment (including sexual or racial), bullying, and work pressure, to exposure to traumatic events and hazardous working environments—can trigger stress responses that lead to both psychological and physical harm.

With an investment of $5.6 million over the next two years, the campaign is a testament to the commitment to protect the wellbeing of over 400,000 people employed in the NSW construction industry. Recent data is sobering: between 2019 and 2024, there were nearly 900 major workers’ compensation mental stress claims in construction, with work-related harassment and bullying being the top culprits. Moreover, the cost of workplace mental ill health is estimated to burden Australian businesses with up to $39 billion each year, not to mention the rising workers’ compensation claims and premiums.

What Can Employers Do?

Creating a psychologically safe workplace isn’t just good practice—it’s essential. Employers can take these steps to support their teams:

  • Identify potential hazards: Understand what factors at work could trigger a stress response.
  • Consult with your team: Engage with workers to discuss potential risks and brainstorm effective ways to manage them.
  • Implement control measures: Put strategies in place to eliminate or minimise risks.
  • Monitor safety: Regularly check that these control measures are working effectively.
  • Review and update: Continually reassess your policies and practices to keep them current.
