The Role of Drug and Alcohol Testing in Maintaining a Safe Workplace

Turning up under the influence of drugs and alcohol to work isn’t a good thing for anyone! We all know this, but sometimes, life happens and it gets hard and people turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. Having a comprehensive drug and alcohol testing program is a great proactive step in managing the risk on site as it acts as a deterrent, but it’s also vital that you, as the PCBU support your workers health and wellbeing in other ways too.. more on that here.

Today though, lets chat about workers under the influence and how it can significantly impair an individual’s ability to perform their job safely, which can lead to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities and how conducting regular testing can keep everyone on site safe.

Meeting the Standard for Testing

There are several standards, including AS/NZS 4308:2008 for urine testing, AS/NZS 4760:2019 for oral fluid testing, and AS 3547-2019 for breath alcohol testing, that workplace drug and alcohol testing is guided by. While the WHS Act 2011 does not mandate drug and alcohol testing, it does require employers to provide a safe work environment, which includes managing risks associated with impairment.
Employers have the right to implement drug and alcohol testing policies, particularly in high-risk industries such as mining, construction, and transportation, where impairment can have catastrophic consequences.

Types of Drug and Alcohol Testing

  • Pre-Employment Testing. Conducted during the hiring process to ensure that potential employees are free from drugs and alcohol before starting work.
  • Random Testing. Unannounced testing of employees to deter substance use. This is particularly effective in maintaining a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Post-Incident Testing. Carried out after a workplace accident or incident to determine if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
  • For-Cause Testing. Initiated when there is reasonable suspicion that an employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, based on observable behaviour or other indicators.

At Hayden Health & Safety, we offer a range of drug and alcohol testing services that are fully compliant with the relevant Australian standards. Our mobile testing units allow us to conduct these tests on-site, providing immediate results and minimising disruption to your operations.

Why Drug and Alcohol Testing Is Important

Substance abuse in the workplace can lead to a range of issues, including:

  • Increased Risk of Accidents: Impaired employees are more likely to cause or be involved in workplace accidents, putting themselves and others at risk.
  • Reduced Productivity: Substance abuse can lead to decreased focus, absenteeism, and poor job performance, all of which negatively impact productivity.
  • Legal and Financial Consequences: Employers may be held liable for accidents caused by impaired employees, leading to costly legal battles and potential fines.

Implementing a drug and alcohol testing program helps to identify and manage these risks, creating a safer and more productive work environment.

Steps to Implement a Drug and Alcohol Testing Program

  1. Develop a Clear Policy: Create a comprehensive drug and alcohol policy that outlines the purpose of testing, the types of tests to be conducted, and the consequences of a positive result.
  2. Communicate with Employees: Ensure that all employees are aware of the policy and understand their responsibilities.
