Compliance and Testing Frequency

Various Testing Methods: We recognise that each business has unique requirements, which is why we offer a variety of testing methods, including
- Oral Fluid Testing: A non-invasive method using saliva samples, ideal for detecting recent drug use.
- Urine Testing: Commonly used for a broad range of substances, providing a longer detection window.
- Breath Alcohol Testing: Quick and reliable, this test measures blood alcohol concentration instantly.
Testing Frequency and Types: The frequency and type of drug and alcohol testing will depend on your business’s specific risks and requirements. Common testing protocols include:
- Pre-Employment Testing: Ensures candidates are free from drug or alcohol influence before joining your team.
- Random Testing: Conducted without prior notice, especially useful for roles with higher safety risks.
- Post-Incident Testing: Implemented after an accident to determine if substance use was a contributing factor.
- For-Cause Testing: Triggered when there are reasonable grounds to suspect substance use, based on observed behaviours or other indicators.
Chain of Custody and Non-Negative Results
We follow a strict chain of custody process to ensure the integrity of each sample, from collection through to analysing Results

If a non-negative result appears during initial testing, the sample is securely sent to a NATA accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing. We usually get laboratory results back in two business days of sending the sample.
During this process, the employee may be temporarily removed from duties, depending on company policy and safety concerns.
Commitment to Workplace Safety and Compliance
At Hayden Health & Safety, our drug and alcohol testing services are more than just compliance measures—they are vital tools in building a responsible and secure work environment. Contact us to discuss how we can help safeguard your workplace and ensure alignment with industry regulations.
Drug & Alcohol Testing FAQs

Both urine and oral fluid (saliva) tests are reliable, but they differ in detection windows and the types of substances they are most effective at identifying. Urine tests have a longer detection window, meaning they can detect substances consumed over the past few days to weeks, depending on the substance. Oral fluid tests, on the other hand, have a shorter detection window, typically up to 24-48 hours, making them more effective for detecting recent use. The choice between urine and oral testing often depends on your specific needs and company policy.
The primary difference lies in the detection window and the method of collection. Urine testing involves collecting a urine sample, which is then tested for the presence of drugsl. It can detect a wide range of substances over a longer period, making it useful for pre-employment and routine testing. Oral fluid testing involves swabbing the mouth to collect saliva, which is then tested. This method is less invasive, quicker, and detects recent use, making it ideal for post-incident or reasonable suspicion testing.
A: Our drug and alcohol tests can screen for a wide range of substances, including but not limited to:
- Amphetamines
- Benzodiazepines (Urine only)
- Cannabis (THC)
- Cocaine
- Opiates
- Methamphetamines
- Alcohol (via breathalyser)
- Oxycodone (Oral only)
The testing process depends on the type of test selected. For urine testing, a sample is collected in a controlled environment and then analysed for the presence of specific substances. For oral fluid testing, a swab is used to collect saliva from the mouth, which is then tested for drugs. Breath alcohol testing is conducted using a breathalyser to measure the alcohol content in the breath.
A screen is the initial test used to identify the presence of substances in the body. It’s a preliminary test that indicates whether a substance may be present. If the screen indicates a non-negative (unconfirmed positive) result, a confirmatory test, typically using more precise methods like GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry), is conducted to verify the presence and quantity of the substance.
The frequency of testing depends on your company’s policy, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. Common testing schedules include pre-employment, random, post-incident, and for-cause testing. High-risk industries may require more frequent testing to ensure safety.
If a non-negative result is obtained during the initial screening, a sample is sent for confirmatory testing to verify the result. The individual may be temporarily removed from safety-sensitive duties until the confirmatory results are received. The final action depends on your company’s policy and the outcome of the confirmatory test.
Your company’s drug and alcohol policy will dictate the specifics of testing, including the types of tests used, the substances screened for, the frequency of testing, and the actions taken in response to test results. It’s essential that your policy is clear, compliant with relevant regulations, and communicated effectively to all employees.
